Finning is the world’s largest Caterpillar dealer, delivering unrivalled service for over 85 years. They sell, rent and provide parts and service for equipment and engines to customers in various industries, including mining, construction, petroleum, forestry and a wide range of power systems applications. First established in Canada in 1933, Finning now employs over 13,000 people world-wide and operates in three geographies, with the head office in Vancouver, Canada.
The Challenge
Finning’s technology teams were using different approaches, language and measures to manage the skills and career development of their technology workforce in Europe, North America and South America. The Employee Engagement score for Learning and Development was 10 to 15 percentage points lower than expected, when compared to other areas of the organization.
The Solution
As part of the globalization of Finning’s Technology function, they adopted SFIA and SkillsTX to address these issues alongside their existing Workday platform. As a consequence, engagement has improved now that people have control over their own skills and career development in the form of a personal planner, providing employees with a development process which is now consistent and objective.
“HR have found the SkillsTX SaaS solution invaluable, as it supplements the more general capabilities of Workday with a detailed skills inventory for the specialist skills in the Technology workforce, supporting meaningful gap analysis for development action planning.”
